A few fundamentals keep any tank healthy — and the right tankmates keep the peace. Here's what we tell every new fishkeeper.
Run the tank for about 4–6 weeks to build the beneficial bacteria that break down waste. Add fish a few at a time, and only once ammonia and nitrite read zero.
Feed a small pinch once or twice a day — only what's eaten in about two minutes. Leftover food is the number-one cause of cloudy water and sick fish.
Swap out 20–30% of the water each week and siphon the gravel. Always treat tap water with a dechlorinator before it goes in.
Float the sealed bag for 15–20 minutes so temperatures match, then mix in a little tank water over 20–30 minutes before releasing. Never tip bag water into the tank.
Keep ammonia and nitrite at 0 and nitrate low. Stable temperature and pH matter more than "perfect" numbers — sudden swings stress fish most.
Bigger tanks stay stable more easily — don't overstock. Check a fish's adult size and whether it needs a group before you buy.
